Curling Fever “Sweeps” America

It seems that America has a new winter pastime and that is the sport of curling. Spurred on by the TV coverage during the 2006 Winter Olympics, the Official USA Curling website, crashed last week with 12.9 million hits of which over 600,000 were unique visitors. Just as popular is the women’s team weblog. Not [...]

This Week’s Creepy Robot: Moldbot

Thanks to a post on Boing Boing, we bring you news of moldbot. Researchers from the University of Southampton in the UK and Japan’s Kobe University grafted some mold onto a circuit and used it as the “brain” for a small bug-bot. The mold, Physarum polycephalum, is sensitive to light, so illuminating parts of the [...]

SFR DVD Pick: Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl

From the bottom of my unwatched DVD pile comes a movie that is more than a wacky Japanese title. Based on a manga of the same name by Minetaro Mochizuki, Shark Skin Man combines nutty Japanese comedy with Tarintinoesque action scenes with a little David Lynch thrown in. With interesting characters, high fashion and a [...]

Do You Get Virtual Frequent Flyer Miles?

Start your engines, flight simmers. The fourth annual Race Around the World starts in a couple weeks on Feb. 20, pitting teams of pilots in a real-time Microsoft Flight Sim relay race that passes through every time zone. The three teams represent some of the top sim sites, AvSim.com, FlightSim.com, and Sim-Outhouse.com. The FlightSim.com team [...]

Blogonnit: Tech

Here’s three blogs every Cube Monkey should have bookmarked (or better yet, added to their Sage feeds in Firefox). A good way to get through another boring Friday.

Valleywag: funny, snarky gossip from Silicon Valley. It’s a hoot.
Make: the blog companion to the homebrew tech Bible.
Engadet: all kinds of gizmos to dream about [...]

Pleo Demo Video

The folks over at C/Net have posted a video, of our favorite robo dino Pleo, being demonstrated at this years Demo convention. My early impressions are that it moves and reacts very slow, but there is a quick shot of the dino without its skin. Take a look.

2005 Web Dork Awards

Look out Grammy’s because the 24 Hour Rapid Response Computer Support Task Force or Geek Squad is already handing out awards. In a press release today the GS announced that they had the results of their Civilian’s Choice Award, which had the online community vote on the best of 5 video clips [...]

SFR Vid Pix: Cosplay

Another video clip from YouTube.com. This time around we take a humorous look at the world of cosplay.

Goodbye Aibo….Hello Pleo

In a strange ironic twist to the Aibo post earlier on SFR, Ugobe, a small robotic startup, will be unveiling a new robotic dinosaur pet called “Pleo”. The dino pet (or Life Form as they are calling it) will be completely interactive and respond to its environment. The goal is that the pet will evolve [...]

SFR Vid Pix: Come With Me

Found a pretty cool video on YouTube called “Come With Me.” It’s one of the better flight sim videos I’ve seen, with a well executed concept and very good editing. It also has some top notch flying and nice combat action from Ubisoft’s Pacific Fighters game.
