XBox 360 fails to sell to Japanese Gamers
Since its December debut in Japan, the Xbox 360 has sold less than 110,000 units. Microsoft executives have blamed the poor sales on the lack of games at launch and confusion about high definition. Microsoft claims that the Japanese public doesn’t understand what high definition is and that marketing could not convey the concept well enough to sell units. I think this is a weak excuse considering that in the early days of high definition, Japanese citizens set up saving accounts to purchase HD TVs produced in later years. I think the real problem was that they unit was not called the Playstation 3 as evidenced in a recent poll that 60% of Japanese gamers will choose to buy the next-gen system from Sony, with Nintendo second. As far as marketing to the Japanese masses, I think that Microsoft should step back and watch the masters at Sony when the PS3 is rolled out later this year.
