Good job for a robot: Picking up mail

Okay, these aren’t real robots, but the US Postal Service is deploying an army of mailboxes built to look like R2D2, and I say that’s a step in the right direction. I could get behind the idea of a motionless robot that just has a slot to drop in mail. Maybe it could confirm for me that the mail actually went into the bin, so I wouldn’t have to open the door again and check to make sure.

Of course, if robots were actually picking up our mail, they could electronically scan the letters and find out all kinds of useful information about us. They would know how much we owe on our credit cards, our long distance calls, how much porno we buy on pay-per-view. Armed with that kind of information, they could ruin our lives and we’d have to kill ourselves out of despair, saving them the trouble and making the robot uprising rather trivial.

Robot mailboxes = bad idea.
