Will Self-Aware Robots Be Self Conscious?
What makes humans and other sentient beings different from other creatures? We can visualize ourselves and our place in the world and then form a plan of action. And for some that plan involves creating robots with the same power of self realization, which will beget smarter robots, until eventually humanity is put to the whip and forced to live in cages by our robot overlords.
From a post at Technovelgy, four robo-scientists recently built a four-legged thinking machine that uses the power of introspection to devise its own means of movement. In their words:
We demonstrate, both computationally and experimentally, how a legged robot automatically synthesizes a predictive model of its own topology (where and how its body parts are connected) through limited yet self-directed interaction with its environment.
In plain English, that means, “we’ve just sealed our doom.” For a more chilling demonstration, here’s a video of the Starfish robot in action:
