No one likes an overachiever
So those lovable little Martian rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, are still going strong, eh? Opportunity reached the edge of a new crater yesterday and will begin examining rocks at the top before scaling its way down inside. Spirit, meanwhile, is exploring a Martian plateau called Home Plate.
No don’t get me wrong, the science is awesome and the data is sure to be of great value to our understanding of the planets. But the thing is, no one likes an overachiever. Seriously, these little bots were supposed to last three months on the surface of Mars and they’ve been there for three years!
Extending the mission a couple months was pretty cool but now I think they are just showing off. “Ooh look at me, still exploring Mars and pushing the boundaries of science and space exploration. Aren’t I special?” Especially Opportunity. Just something about that one I don’t like.
