The Greatest Robot Generation?
Proof positive that robot propaganda has been around a lot longer than you think. Back in the heyday of comic books there was a title called G.I. Robot about, you guessed it, a robot soldier. According to Dr. K’s 100-Page Super Spectacular, the comic by Bob Kanigher concerned a robot called J.A.K.E. built by the US Army to fight the Japanese in the South Pacific. If you want to get people liking bots, you can’t do worse than a patriotic metal man fighting for freedom. Dr. K says, “J.A.K.E. never speaks, and much dramatic tension in his stories comes from human soldiers debating about his ability to feel.” Kinda like John Wayne in every WWII movie he ever made? Of couse, you’d think the Japanese would have had some kind of Gundam to match machine wits with this dogface.
