How Did Christmas Survive Star Wars?
This doesn’t really have anything to do with robots or anything else, but with the holiday decorations going up I am reminded of the most frightening Christmas special ever shown on American TV.
The year was 1978 and CBS decided to cash in on the mega-popularity of Star Wars by commissioning the Star Wars Holiday Special. Why George Lucas ever decided to go along with the idea is anyone’s guess, but the result very nearly killed both the Star Wars franchise and the holiday season. Seriously, how we ever made it through the drug-induced 70s I’ll never know.
If you’ve never seen it, count yourself lucky. The two-hour special featured guest appearances from Art Carney and Bea Arthur, Diahann Carroll doing a “sexy” dance number, and Jefferson Starship performing a song in a “holographic” music video. And of course there were all the main Star Wars characters, including Chewbacca, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker. Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia almost singlehandedly destroyed the world with her singing talents at the end of the show. (Drugs, I tell you they are bad.)
If you must, here’s a highlight reel someone has put together and posted on YouTube. Happy holidays!
