Macworld: w00t!

w00t! Steve Jobs shows off the MacBook Air at MacworldMerry Apple Xmas. Hope there was something good for you in Santa Steve’s sack of goodies.

For me, anyway, the highlight of the Macworld keynote today was the new Apple TV. Lots of new features are being rolled out to make Steve’s “hobby” something actually useable. Now you can order movies, TV shows, and music right from the couch, not to mention movie rentals from iTunes. Did you see the list of studios that have signed on? Blockbuster is pooping its pants right now.

But back to the hardware, the improved device is even more like a set-top box because it no longer needs another PC on the network to download music and video, though it will still synch with other PCs to show whatever iTunes content they have. Podcasts and photo, YouTube videos, all that good stuff right there on the TV. Sweet!

Of course, Apple TV doesn’t do everything I’d want a PC media center/set-top box to do (no DVD drive; what about other online media?), but this is definitely moving in the right direction.

More hardware from SJ came in the form of an ultra-sleek, ultra-thin notebook, the MacBook Air. Yeah, the name is kinda lame, but what great looking laptop. Just 0.76 inches tall and weighing in at just three pounds, you can take this baby just about anywhere. Add in the 13″ screen, full-size keyboard, and 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo standard CPU, and this is the real deal. The downside, though, is there’s no DVD drive in it (where would it fit?), but Apple has an external USB optical drive you can buy for $99.

What else? An update for the iPhone and iTouch that offers location triangulation on Google Maps, better SMS, and customized home screen. Glorious Leader also showed off Time Capsule, a wireless network storage device that can automatically backup your entire system.

Lots to ogle over at this Macworld. But wait a minute, where was the “one more thing?” Damn, now I feel cheated.
