How Much For That Gundam?
What’s great about the Japanese is they are always thinking about building giant robots. What’s scary about the Japanese is THEY ARE ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT BUILDING GIANT ROBOTS!
But how much would it actually cost to build a Gundam? Finally we have the answer: $725 million. At least that’s the figure someone at SciencePortal (via Pink Tentacle) came up with, sourcing all the components needed to build an 18 meter-tall robot.
In their estimation it would require 30 high-power electric motors powered by seven gas turbine engines just to make the damn thing move, and then don’t forget the $1.5 million IBM supercomputer to keep it under control.
Now $725 million for a piece of hardware — even a giant piece of hardware — sounds like a lot, but considering Sony alone made $70 billion in revenue last year, I think the Japanese could do it.
Damn, I think the Japanese could really do it!
