Making Good Killer Robots

At a Stanford University conference this past weekend, scientists debated the pros and cons of creating autonomous robot killing machines. To me it seems like a rather one sided debate — robots killing people vs. robots not killing people — but someone managed to defend the idea that creating war machines with artificial intelligence is a good idea.

Ronald Arkin from the Georgia Institute of Technology, who’s work is partly funded by the defense industry, argued that the Pentagon is hellbent on creating war bots so scientists should focus on making sure these machines are at least ethical. Money quote: “We could reduce man’s inhumanity to man through technology.”

I’m sure that we’ll all be comforted by the knowledge that when the robot uprising comes and the mass slaughter of the human race begins it will at least be done according to the rules.
