Science Fiction Robots

The blog with a love/hate relationship with technology

Mobile Suit Carpenter

In their never-ending quest to augment the human form with metal and hydraulics, researchers in Japan have developed a powered exoskeleton designed to help carpenters hang drywall. The wearable device provides lifting power and strength to assist in the arduous task of putting up ceiling panels and other heavy-lifting activities.
Having done some drywall work in [...]

And When You Sneeze Does The Robot Say “Ichi homerarete?”

Never at a loss for a reason to deploy an army of robots, the Japanese are hoping their cyborg buddies will help them avoid hay fever this year.
Tokyo-based Weathernews is set to unleash a flotilla of Pollen Bots that people can hang outside their homes to monitor the air quality. In typical Japanese fashion, the [...]

Too Many Robots In The Kitchen

A Chinese professor named Liu Changfa has developed a robot cook that has a built-in induction cooker and a pot to prepare meals for us. The upside of this is you no longer have to worry about someone spitting in the food or finding a stray hair on your plate. The downside, of course, is [...]

I’ll Stay Home While Robo Me Goes To Work

We’re pretty hard around here on the whole robot revolution, and I’ll admit that sometimes we’re even a little unfair in our criticisms. But just as freely, we’ll admit when the robo-fanatics come up with something good, like IvanAnywhere.
According to a story in Ontario’s The Record (by way of Gizmodo), programmer Ivan Bowman has [...]

Autowipe

We hear all the time about new robot innovations meant to make our lives easier and better, but this would be one service I’d rather not leave to the machines, thank you. Not even the Japanese, bless their hearts, use actual robots to tend to their bathroom hygiene. Though it would insure the efficient use [...]

I, Drinkbot

We’ve noticed a disturbing trend here of more and more robots designed to service our needs where it comes to alcohol, either mixing cocktails, pouring us beers, or just tossing cans of lager at us, so we thought it would be a good and novel idea to make a video with a warning about the [...]

Robot in Iraq go boom

Okay, so maybe robots do have an important role to play in our society. They make way better cannon fodder than people do.

Take off your pants, the robot will see you in a minute

According to a story from the Associate Press, doctors may one day use robots to examine patients. The Sinai Hospital in Baltimore is has a new robot with a camera, video screen and microphone that a doctor can control with a joystick to examine patients from long distance.
I like doctors about as much as [...]

Another beer-pouring robot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCccJlW3GUM

I’m starting to think that robots — or maybe the robot makers — are maybe a tad bit alcoholic with all these bots designed to pour beer and mix drinks. Though I would say that this one would be a little tough to get into the living room. Better stick with the Japanese version.

MASH units for robots

Around here we have a lot of fun fear mongering about killer robots and the coming robot uprising, but the fact is that robots are fighting a war, but on our side. The army has a flotilla of robots doing duty in Iraq finding and disposing of anti-personnel explosives. They are saving limbs and lives [...]
